本书把目前存世的楔形文字“巴比伦命盘/生辰占星文本”（horoscopes 与部分 birth notes）首次作为一个整体语料汇集、校勘、转写并译注，目的主要是提供可靠文本基础，而不是写一部综合性的“巴比伦占星学思想史”。作者在序言中强调：这类文本与“生辰凶兆/诞生凶兆传统”有密切渊源，但与一般凶兆文本不同，命盘类文本需要依赖计算天文学来给出出生时诸行星位置，因此在巴比伦占星楔形文字文献中具有独特性。
